Connecting to the Computer

Now that the probes were installed, I started to seriously look at the datalogger and connecting it to my computer.

HotTop roaster, Omega HH506RA data logger, installed probes and XP computer

The equipment I use is:

1 – HH506RA – Omega 2 channel datalogger (Website Canada) (Website US)
1 – HH506RA-USB-SW – Omega USB optical interface cable
2 – KTSS-HH – Omega 6″ K-type probes (Website US)

First the HH506RA has to be set up. Plug in the two K-type probes.
Turn on the unit by pressing the ESC (1) key

1. Turn OFF APO (Auto Power Off)
If APO is showing on the screen then the unit will auto power off after 5 minutes.
Press Shift (9) to enter shift mode. Shift will show in the lower right. Now the top commands on the keys will be performed.
Press [APO] (8) to turn on/off Auto Power Off.
Press Shift (9) to exit shift mode.
APO should disappear. The unit how has to be powered off manually with the ESC key

2. Set the date time.
WITH shift off press SET[] (6) to enter setup mode.
Press [TIME] (12) to enter date time entry.
Enter the YY:MM:DD and HH:MM:SS using the number pad (example (2) for 0, (4) for 1…)
Press ENTER (3) to store the date/time

3. Set C or F.
Press Shift (9)
Press oC/oF
Shift auto turns off so if you wish to change it again press Shift again.

4. Set probe type
The KTSS-HH is a K-type probe. I use Probe 1 (T1) for the bean temp and probe 2 (T2) for the drum temp.

T1/T2 (10) selects which probe shows in the top window. Set to T1. In the top of the display above the temp it shows T1 or T2.
The type of probe shows beside the oC or oF
The types supported include: K, J, T, E, R, S, N
Press Shift (9) to enter SHIFT mode
Press TYPE (10). Each time you press it cycles to the next probe type. Select K
Press Shift (9) to exit SHIFT mode

Press T1/T2 (10) to change the probe displayed up top to Probe T2.
Press Shift (9) to enter SHIFT mode
Press TYPE (11). Each time you press it cycles to the next probe type. Select K
Press Shift (9) to exit SHIFT mode

Press T1/T2 (10) to change the probe displayed up top to Probe T1.

Now the Bean Temp shows up top and the drum temp shows in the lower left.

The various manuals and details are available on the web. The HH506RA page has links to the manuals and details. Note the datalogger comes with a serial cable but none of my computers has a serial port anymore so I bought the USB cable. This is not just a cable but an optical interface into the unit to avoid noise issues.

Once the USB software and HH506RA software is installed you need to find out what com port the USB is. On Win XP open Control Panel / System / Hardware.

Click on Device Manager.

I have a bluetooth device on my computer so I ended up with COM14. On my small computer in the top image it was COM4.

Next post I will go into the computer program. I feel like I am making real progress. I can log the temperatures every second with the software. Next I want to write software so that the readings will go directly into my plotting software. I am looking for a Java coder to work with me on interfacing to the datalogger.

  1. Always come with COM port connector. USB cable is an option. As most PCs do not have a serial port anymore the USB cable is needed.

    would you mind if you updating me latest work on software coffee roaster program?? because i want to purchase coffee roaster and i want to install the software to observe the thermodynamic reaction cracking stages accuracy, inotify one plot what about if i have multi thermocouples reading drum temp and beans temperature at different point , will be avg between consider ??
